It is estimated that around 45.6% of the population of São Tomé and Príncipe uses firewood in the cooking process, a practice that significantly contributes to deforestation in the country.

Within the scope of the Landscape Restoration Project for Ecosystem Functionality and Climate Change Mitigation in São Tomé and Príncipe, the Restoration Initiative (TRI Project), implemented in the country by FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and executed by Directorate of Forests and Biodiversity, the NGO MARAPA developed the Fogobô - an improved stove based on the principles of the “Rocket Stove” model and which allows more efficient combustion, resulting in an optimization of firewood consumption in approximately 60% less wood fuel and thus being an important measure to combat deforestation in the country.
