Background

UN Women - the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, strives to eradicate discrimination against women and girls. It champions the equal participation of women and men in all aspects of development, human rights, humanitarian efforts, peace, and security, as envisioned in the United Nations Charter.

In 2022, UN Women embarked on a critical initiative to support Afghan women affected by the ongoing conflict, particularly those in the diaspora within the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region. This initiative aimed to provide a safe space for these women to engage in dialogue, build and maintain relationships, and collaborate on strategies to protect and advance gender equality. The focus was on empowering Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs), Women Peacebuilders (WPBs), women leaders, civil society, and a new generation of peace activists to leverage regional and global support and shape any future governance configuration in Afghanistan.
