Women in Politics Akwa Ibom (WIPA) Project

Background

Massive inequity persists in women’s participation in all areas of electoral processes. In the 2023 general elections, 380 women in total (288 House candidates, and 92 Senate candidates) ran for parliament, which accounts for roughly 9.2 percent and 8.4 percent of candidates, respectively. Of those, 20 women (17 Representatives, and three Senators) were elected to Nigeria's parliament (4.2 percent). Nigeria ranks 180 out of 185 countries in terms of women’s representation in parliament.

Youth Alive Foundation seeks to address these challenges and continue progress towards enhancing the participation of women in politics in Akwa Ibom state through the Women in Politics Akwa Ibom (WIPA) project.
