Job Description

Water pollution from abandoned metal mines is a big deal in England, affecting about 1,500 kilometres of rivers and harming river wildlife. The Water and Abandoned Metal Mines (WAMM) Programme was created to investigate this and develop treatment schemes to reduce pollution.

Our workload just got bigger: in 2023, Parliament adopted a new, legally binding target to halve the length of English rivers polluted by harmful metals from abandoned metal mines by 2038.

This is where you come in. We want you to help us achieve this target by working nationally to plan and co-ordinate the catchment studies. These measure water quality and flow and identify the key sources of metal pollution needing treatment. You’ll be involved in coordinating river monitoring to verify the success of interventions as they come on-line and repeating the national polluted river length monitoring every few years to report on our progress.
