The Generator – where Loughborough's Heritage, Industry, Learning, Creativity and Community cooperatively combine.
Built in the 1930s and one of the original buildings of the Loughborough Technical Institute it originally housed electrical generators, which Dr Herbert Schofield, founding father of the Institute, salvaged from German U-boats. They supplied power to all the Institute’s (later Loughborough College) buildings up to 1960 when the generating station was closed and power for the college system was taken from the mains electrical supply.
Thousands of local people learned technical skills there, with many going on to work in the town’s engineering, hosiery and textile industries.
The building was then repurposed and used as part of Loughborough Art College until it closed in 2011 when the Art School moved onto the university campus, about a mile out of the centre of town.
