The Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner (PCNP) is a self-directed practitioner who directs, provides, and evaluates patient care based on advanced practice nursing and medical management knowledge and skills. The PCNP has a greater breadth, depth and complexity of application of nursing knowledge, skills, attitudes, judgement and performs additional activities beyond the Registered Nursing practice (CARNA, 2011). This position functions as an integral member of the Palliative/End of Life Care portfolio by combining the roles of practitioner, teacher, consultant, leader, and researcher through integrating inter-disciplinary clinical practice, nursing staff development and research activities.
